Winter Oats

Avena sativa
Winter Oats (Avena sativa) is an annual grass native to southern and midwestern US states (such as Texas, Georgia, and Kansas) and has also been successfully introduced across North America as a non-invasive cool-season cover crop and forage grass that can thrive in USDA Zones 6–10 as a winter annual. Reaching a mature height of 2–4 feet with an erect, stout bunching growth habit, it features broad green leaf blades and produces loose seed panicles. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soils in full sun and is ideal for winter cover cropping, green manure biomass production, and livestock forage.
