Tree Clover / Tagasaste (Chamaecytisus palmensis) is a perennial evergreen shrub native to western US states (such as California) and has also been successfully introduced across North America as a non-invasive drought-hardy fodder plant that can thrive in USDA Zones 8–10. Reaching a mature height of 6–12 feet with a tall, upright, multi-stemmed branching growth habit, it features trifoliate grayish-green leaves and produces clusters of creamy-white pea-like flowers. It thrives in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils in full sun and is ideal for dryland fodder production, nitrogen fixation, and windbreak shelterbelts.
This is an annual herb that typically grows up to 1 foot tall. It is used in wildflower gardens and for soil improvement due to its nitrogen-fixing capabilities. This plant prefers full sun and grows in grasslands and open meadows.
