Superb Beardtongue / Superb Penstemon (Penstemon superbus) is a perennial forb native to Southwestern US states (such as Arizona and New Mexico) that can thrive in USDA Zones 7–10. Reaching a mature height of 2–4 feet with an upright, smooth-stemmed growth habit, it features thick, glaucous blue-green leaves and produces tall, showy spikes of vivid coral-pink to bright red tubular flowers. It thrives in dry desert washes, sandy plains, and rocky foothill slopes in full sun and is ideal for arid highway revegetation, desert slope stabilization, and hummingbird conservation.
Tall native perennial with pink-coral flowers, blooming April to June. Drought tolerant, occurring on well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil in rocky canyons, washes and shrublands in and around the Chihuahua Desert; 3,500 to 5,500 ft. elevation. Use in habitat restoration and xeriscaping beyond its native range. Tubular flowers attract hummingbirds.
