Cool season, long-lived, perennial bunchgrass found in meadows, streambanks, forest openings, subalpine meadows and alpine tundra. Prefers dry, well-drained, rocky areas; occasionally moist sites. Extremely cold and fire tolerant. Low nutrient requirements; moderately tolerant of acidic and alkaline soils. Good soil builder and erosion control species. Important forage during the growing season and into late fall.
