Water Smartweed (Persicaria amphibia) is a perennial forb native to US states nationwide (such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oregon, and New York) that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–9. Reaching a mature height of 1–3 feet with an aquatic or decumbent amphibious growth habit, it features smooth, dark green floating or terrestrial leaves and produces bright pink cylindrical flower spikes. It thrives in shallow water, mud, and lake margins and is ideal for wetland restoration, aquatic habitat creation, and shoreline protection.
Smartweed grows best in moist to wet soils across the United States. It is highly utilized by waterfowl and other wildlife. It can be found in wetlands, mud flats, and pond edges. Smartweed can grow while inundated as long as some of the leaves remain above the surface. Plants will grow 1-2 feet in height and produce a white/pink flower from July-October.
