Scarlet Bugler (Penstemon barbatus) is a perennial forb native to Southwestern US states (such as Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–8. Reaching a mature height of 2–4 feet with an upright, slender-stemmed growth habit, it features smooth, lance-shaped green leaves and produces tall, airy spikes of brilliant scarlet-red, drooping tubular flowers with bearded lower lips. It thrives in dry, gravelly, or rocky mountain slopes, canyon edges, and roadsides in full sun to partial shade and is ideal for mountain slope stabilization, dryland restoration, and hummingbird habitat conservation.
Tall native perennial with brilliant red tubular flowers, blooming June to October. Drought tolerant, preferring dry, rocky slopes, open woods, roadsides and disturbed areas; 2,000 to 11,000 ft. elevation. Use for restoration and erosion control mixes. Late-summer nectar is very attractive to migrating hummingbirds.
