Rox Orange Forage Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is an annual grass native to Midwestern and Southern US states (such as Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma) and has also been successfully introduced across North America as a non-invasive crop that can thrive in USDA Zones 4–11 as a warm-season annual. Reaching a mature height of 6–8 feet with an upright sturdy growth habit, it features sweet, leafy green stalks and produces reddish-orange seed panicles. It thrives in warm, well-drained agricultural soils and is ideal for high-sugar silage harvesting, livestock hay, and fodder.
Rox Orange is a selection of forage sorghum released by the Kansas State Agricultural Experiment Station in the 1930's. Compared to earlier forage sorghums, it had more palatable stalks with a higher sugar content and less tannin in the seeds. It is distinctly inferior in both yield and quality to modern BMR hybrids.
