Purpletop Tridens (Tridens flavus) is a perennial grass native to Eastern and Central US states (such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, and Texas) that can thrive in USDA Zones 4–9. Reaching a mature height of 3–5 feet with an upright clumping growth habit, it features smooth green leaves and produces broad, oily, reddish-purple seed panicles that turn dark late in the season. It thrives in dry to moist fields, open woods, and roadsides and is ideal for native grass restoration, roadside erosion control, and wildlife cover.
This perennial, warm season grass is known to grow well in droughty, infertile soils throughout the eastern portions of the United States. Reaching 3-6 feet in height, it prefers full to partial sunlight and competes well with some of the other warm season grasses. Shallow plantings into a firm seedbed at 10-20 pls lbs/acre in the spring are recommended.
