Sweet Alyssum / Purple Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) is an annual forb native to coastal US states (such as California) and has also been successfully introduced across North America as a non-invasive flowering annual that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–10. Reaching a mature height of 4–8 inches with a low-growing, spreading carpet-like growth habit, it features small, narrow, grayish-green leaves and produces dense, sweet-scented clusters of tiny deep purple to lavender blooms. It thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils in full sun to partial shade and is ideal for orchard ground cover, highway slope stabilization, and beneficial insect attraction.
Formerly Alyssum maritimum. Annual or short-lived perennial with clusters of small white flowers, blooming most of the growing season. Use as a low-growing, low maintenance groundcover or in well-drained, partially shaded wildflower gardens.
