Yellow Owl's Clover (Castilleja campestris) is an annual forb native to Western US states (such as California) that can thrive in USDA Zones 7–10 as a spring annual. Reaching a mature height of 4–12 inches with a slender, hemiparasitic upright growth habit, it features linear green leaves and produces dense terminal spikes of bright yellow to white hooded flowers surrounded by green or yellow-tipped bracts. It thrives in wet, clay soils of vernal pools, seasonal swales, and moist valley plains in full sun and is ideal for vernal pool habitat restoration, seasonal wetland stabilization, and native bee support.
Formerly Orthocarpus purpurascens. Drought tolerant, native annual root-parasite with bright rose-purple bract flowers, blooming March to June. Occurs on many soil types in large masses along hillsides and in pastures; up to 5,000 ft. elevation. May form a stunning carpet across the desert floor in wet years. Attracts hummingbirds.
