This perennial shrub can be found growing in sandy soils of open prairies and woodlands from central to eastern North America. Reaching 3 feet in height, it grows well in full to partial sun and tolerates drought condition quite well due to its deep taproot that can reach to 15 feet. Small white flowers bloom in clusters from April-June and are frequented by small pollinators.
