Needle & Thread

Stipa comata

Needle and Thread Grass (Hesperostipa comata) is a perennial grass native to Western and Northern US states (such as Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and North Dakota) that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–7. Reaching a mature height of 1–3 feet with an upright bunching growth habit, it features narrow, rolled green leaf blades and produces long, awned seed heads with sharp bases. It thrives in sandy or gravelly soils on dry prairies and rangelands and is ideal for arid rangeland rehabilitation, soil erosion control, and native steppe restoration.
