Mountain Rye (Secale montanum) is a perennial grass native to northern US states (such as Idaho and Montana) and has also been successfully introduced across North America as a non-invasive forage grass that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–8. Reaching a mature height of 2–4 feet with a stout, upright bunching growth habit, it features broad, blue-green leaf blades and produces long, heavy, awned grain spikes. It thrives in well-drained loamy to gravelly soils on mountain slopes and drylands and is ideal for high-altitude soil stabilization, dryland pasture forage, and firebreak revegetation.
Mountain Rye is a perennial grass that grows between 2 to 3 feet tall. It is used for forage, erosion control, and soil stabilization. This grass prefers full sun and well-drained soils, often found in dry, open areas such as grasslands and shrublands.
