Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is a perennial evergreen shrub native to Southwestern US states (such as Arizona and California) that can thrive in USDA Zones 9–11. Reaching a mature height of 3–8 feet with a dense, rounded, multi-stemmed growth habit, it features thick, leathery, grayish-green oval leaves and produces small, greenish-yellow flowers followed by nut-like seed capsules. It thrives in dry, coarse, well-drained desert soils, mesas, and dry washes in full sun and is ideal for desert wind erosion control, commercial oil seed production, and arid land revegetation.
Annual or short-lived perennial. Colorful pansy-like blooms are deep purple and yellow, blooming in March and April. Prefers partial shade and rich, well-drained soils. Spreads by seed and most often occurs in patches. Found in prairies, open woodlands, fields, pastures, roadsides and waste areas.
