Giant Bur-reed (Sparganium eurycarpum) is a perennial forb native to Northern and Central US states (such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, and Washington) that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–8. Reaching a mature height of 3–5 feet with an upright spreading growth habit, it features stout, strap-like green leaves and produces spherical, bur-like green-to-brown flower and fruit heads. It thrives in shallow water, mudflats, and marsh edges and is ideal for wetland restoration, stream bank stabilization, and waterfowl habitat creation.
A 2-6 foot tall perennial, giant bur-reed grows best in wet to inundated soils with high fertility and full sunlight. It can be found growing in its moist habitat across much of the United States. Its green/white blooms can be seen from July-August before setting seed that are utilized by waterfowl.
