Silphium perfoliatum
Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum) is a perennial forb native to Midwestern and Eastern US states (such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio) that can thrive in USDA Zones 3–9. Reaching a mature height of 4–8 feet with a tall upright growth habit, it features square stems and cup-forming opposite green leaves that hold rainwater, producing showy yellow daisy-like flower heads. It thrives in moist prairie soils, floodplains, and stream banks and is ideal for wetland buffer creation, stream bank stabilization, and bird habitat.
