Beach Evening Primrose (Oenothera drummondii) is a perennial forb native to Gulf Coast US states (such as Texas, Louisiana, and Florida) that can thrive in USDA Zones 8–11. Reaching a mature height of 1–2 feet with a sprawling, prostrate-to-ascending growth habit, it features fleshy, velvety grayish-green leaves and produces large, bright yellow flowers that open in the evening. It thrives in coastal sand dunes, beach ridges, and dry sandy soils and is ideal for coastal dune stabilization, sand erosion control, and coastal habitat restoration.
This is a low-growing perennial, reaching heights of 4 to 12 inches. It is primarily used as ground cover and is especially effective in preventing erosion in sandy coastal habitats. This plant thrives in full sun and is well adapted to the harsh, salt-laden environment of beaches and dunes.
